TINA TURNER.
When I first heard this song in the early 1980s, performed by another artist (it was actually the original version), it seemed to be ambient noise. It was some "nameless" singer lamenting against a droning and feeble "trebly" kind of riff. The song just didn't impress me. It was too long. It was such a drag that I never even listened to the lyrics -- and I missed some beautiful, heart-wrenching irony in the form of a love letter framed in obvious denial.
Several years later, while driving to the local 7-11 for a 20 oz. GIANT cup of coffee, I heard Tina Turner's version of the song.
As it is spoken in the lyrics, with some poetic license in paraphrasing "I had to catch my breath...". I sat in the parking lot, totally absorbed, my heart pounding -- just listening to Tina sweat her agonized voice out through the lyrics. The pulse of the enhanced bass and drums, combined with her crying, tormented, soulful, exhausted yet undyingly energetic voice just took me away.
Music that takes you away. Tina Turner's version of "I Ain't Missin' You At All". Stop what you're doing and play this now. Click on either the link or on the video player and make sure the volume is high. Make sure you're not interrupted. This is sacred and introspective communion with the secrets of your very own heart. It's pure, it's raw and it's beautiful.
It's perfect. The live version follows, first. Very rich, deep synth -- classical-sounding. Mmmm....

A tamer, recorded version follows. Pump up the Bass Boost, as well as the volume. Do that for me. Please.

p.s. A message to someone from my distant past. For all the times you called out for me and I was just too busy watching the door, looking for something 'better'. For all the times in the many, many years after that I called your old home phone number from some pay phone somewhere with tears welling up in my eyes and freezing on my cheeks...If you hadn't broken it, I never would have known that I had a heart. Thank you for more than I can ever express, and for more than I ever deserved. - Doug
