Eye Movements And Your Thinking...

Your eye movements are incredibly revealing about what you are thinking. This is simply because specific types of eye movements correlate with the mental faculties (parts or functions of the brain) that you are accessing. The eyes truly are the windows to the soul -- and, quite often the signals of your intention.

NLP practitioners, neuroscientists, psychologists and even poker players have long-realized that different eye movements tell about 1) the person, in general, and 2) what part of the mind or type of thinking the same person is going through in response to a stimulus or question.

According to neurological research, eye movement both laterally and vertically seems to be associated with activating different parts of the brain. In the neurological literature, these movements are called lateral eye movements (LEM) and in NLP, 'eye accessing cues' because they give us insights as to how people are accessing information.

To get an idea how your eyes move, consider the following questions. For each question, as you think of the answer (think first, to allow your eyes to move naturally) notice the direction(s) of your eye movements (up, down, or to the left or right side) or, if your eyes do not seem to move (although they always are -- just at very rapid intervals) notice if you have a sense that you tend to looking in a certain direction (even if only for a fraction of a second).

What is the color of your car?
What will you look like in 25 years?
What does your favorite music sound like? Think of a favorite song.
What would your voice sound like if you were speaking with a mouth full of mouthwash?
When you talk to yourself aloud, what type of voice do you use?
What does it feel like to be in a nice, warm, relaxing, Japanese bath?

Your eyes probably had an almost magnetic, automatic tendency to look up for the first two questions, to the side for the next two questions, and down for the last two questions. In general, if you are constructing or visualizing a picture in your mind, your eyes will tend to go up to the left or the right; for sounds, they'll tend to move laterally to the left or right; and downward to the left or right for recalling feelings or when you talk or think about talking to yourself.

More specifically, if you are right-handed, you may have noticed the following (for people who are left handed, interchange left and right in the following text):

Question 1 - eyes up and to your left. This is a question about something you have seen before and hence you remembered it -- visual remembered (VR).
Question 2 - eyes up and to your right. This is a question about something that I assume you have not seen before and hence you constructed this picture - visual constructed (VC).
Question 3 - eyes on the horizontal plane to your left. This is a question about something you have heard before - auditory remembered (AR).
Question 4 - eyes on the horizontal plane to your right. This is a question about something you have not heard before - auditory constructed (AC).
Question 5 - eyes down and to the left. This is a question about your self talk - auditory digital (Ad).
Question 6 - eyes down and to the right. This is a question about your feelings- kinesthetic (K).

Note: The above eye patterns are how your eyes would move if you are right-handed. The following picture describes the eye patterns for a right-handed person as you look at them - please note this distinction. These patterns are fairly consistent across all races, with the possible exception of the Basques, who appear to have a number of exceptions to the rule. For many left-handed people, the chart is reversed i.e. mirror image.

What would it sound like if you played your two favourite pieces of music at the same time?

What is something you continually tell yourself?
What are your thoughts about this article?

Kinesthetic
What does it feel like to walk barefoot on a cool sandy beach?
What does it feel like when you rub your fingers on sandpaper?

Using Eye Patterns to Gauge Truthfulness or Congruence

If a person is describing something that they have seen or heard, then his or her eyes should primarily move to the visual or auditory remembered positions. However --- if a person is making something up, then his or her eyes will tend to move to visual or auditory constructed, indicating that the person is constructing some part of the situation they are describing. This may indicate that the person is either uncertain or untruthful about what they are thinking. But there is indeed a big difference between being uncertain or deliberately untruthful. Either one of these tasks requires the use of reconstructive thought.

Be very careful before assuming that someone is being untruthful. For example, suppose you were to ask me a question about something that I had never thought about before. To formulate an answer, I might have to look at or hear one or more pieces of true information in a way or context in which I had never done so previously. In this situation, I would be constructing an answer and my eyes would most likely move to the visual or auditory constructed positions.

Trying to assess what or how a person is thinking utilizing eye movement tracking alone is indeed helpful, but when combined with other body signals and nonverbal communication, your "reading" of the other person becomes much more reliable.

Enhanced Emails And Mobile Messaging

I have often mentioned that both email and texting carry with them an air of impersonality, of impatience, and of conspicuous disrespectful multitasking. While my basic feelings are somewhat the same as they were a year ago (see below), "enhanced" emails and mobile messages can carry much more detail, gravity, personality and even intimacy if they are done with painstaking care. Here's my view from the past:

Email is the appropriate broadcast or distribution forum for non-time-sensitive mass mailing, sending newsletters, for issuing memos (where an electronic record should be retained) and for sending large attachments. It is superb for contracts, as well. It is becoming somewhat outmoded by many other signaling mechanisms and applications, but it is still quite useful.

Having said this, email does not work, (certainly not even as effectively as instant messaging, rapid back-and-forth texting, telephoning, web conferencing or just getting together (in the real world, and not in some coffee chatroom in cyberspace), for having a conversation. Here's why:

1) Too much time may lapse between sending, receiving and responding. Momentum is lost, timeliness is lost, spontaneity is lost, and nuances of meaning are lost. Emails are cold representatives, and very flat-affect messengers. No brainstorming every happened through a discrete series of emails.

2) If your email subject line isn't a grabber, you're liable to wind up being inadvertently deleted -- and you'll sit stewing in anger on the wrongful assumption that your email was read. There is so much correspondence in the average inbox that your missive is likely to be missed. If it is read by the intended recipient, it may be read more than a day after it was sent.

3) Email now carries a cache, deservedly or not, of being one-sided, and is generally read with a modicum of prejudice against the sender. The hidden message that supersedes and often outweighs the email content is that "I am making a declaration from the mountaintop, and I don't wish to be interrupted by your thoughts or questions."

If you truly want to accomplish something, conversations are best carried out where there is a facility and expectation of rapid thought and response...sort of like neurons transmitting a signal.

The bottom line is this: Use email wisely. It is a useful tool for transmitting information. But never use it as a platform for passionate, urgent or sensitive conversation. It works against you.

Now I'll take a moment to update and modify my stance (Man -- how I hate to be proven wrong!). With the availability, increasing popularity and increasing quality of voicemail embeds (http://audioboo.fm), where people can hear you speak, with the utmost sincerity for up to 3 minutes -- and with the embedding of either webcam or other videos, slideshows, hysterically-scripted avatars (http://www.voki.com), and 2 minute cartoons (http://goanimate.com), an email or text message can be personalized, more sensorially captivating, and much more meaningful.

It even affords the sender a chance to put extra creativity, and an echo of his or her personality into the transmittal.

I would strongly suggest that you give these enhancements a try -- not only for basic person-to-person communications, but even for group messages, entertainment of the recipients and serious marketing and branding. We'll have to wake up the folks at MAD MARKETING TACTICS about this development.

In the meantime, meet a friend of mine from the skeleton crew who went out on a wild bender last night and forgot to attend his ladyfriend's dinner dance...He appears to us through Voki.

Secret Signs, Codes And Languages...

In establishing deeper friendships and intimacy, sharing secrets on the basis of trust is a powerful bonding strategy. The power of sharing and trust cannot be underestimated, as they are the true foundation of all meaningful Human interaction and socialization.

Another strategy for building more deeply personal relationships which is not quite as potent, but which is less risky (at the outset) is the mutual invention (by you and your friend-in-the-making) of secret signs, codes and languages. This is extraordinarily childish, but it appeals to all of us at a very deep subconscious level. It also adds an element of fun to interpersonal relationship development.

A mutual rolling of eyes when a certain boring someone is speaking [in an annoying nasal tone -- I can't stand that] is a wonderful example. A special hand gesture or shared clearing of the throat when something predictable about to happen, or when a third party (there are unknowing victims in all of this, but they are not really victims at all if you have the ethical fortitude to avoid making gestures or signs about someone into a group activity).

Calling persons, objects or events by code names, even silly ones, becomes a very intimate "secret language" which inevitably has the effect of bringing two persons closer together. Ironically, many relationships have their start with a shared gesture followed by a silly nod of agreement or assent. What the parties seldom understand is that they are developing intimacy through the sharing of a private language.

I befriended one of my best childhood pals when hardboiled eggs were being served in the school cafeteria and we both, almost simultaneously, held our noses at the stench.

Sharing secret signs, codewords (usually rude nicknames) or expressions is the simplest, least risky means of having another person identify with us, share with us, and trust us with a small, seemingly harmless secret. It is a powerful building block to sharing and trusting with far greater things.

You are never too old, and the situation is never too solemn, to do this. It is powerful, fast-acting and effective...a sort of "superglue".

The world is your laboratory. I would suggest that you get started with this incredibly meaningful and significant "nonsense" right away.

Natural Sign Language - Enhanced Communication

Image via WikipediaOn a recent trip to Southeast Asia, I learned a great number of things while being in isolated 'conversational' encounters with other folks who spoke almost exclusively Cantonese, while I had only my Americanized English to offer. By the way, if you're a Yank venturing east, remember to boil all water before you drink it.

At first, encounters were awkward as my conversational counterparts and I each tried using some words in our native tongues. But as we became more comfortable, conversation became much more comfortable, efficient and rapid as we simulated to each other (through crude sign language demonstrations of acts, rather like the game of "Charades"), and became responsive by using the most universal signs for "yes," "no," "tell me more, I don't quite understand," "Oh, I get it!," and the ever-popular eye rolling when finding something mutually ridiculous or objectionable.

When we physically (visually and viscerally) demonstrate what we want to say, we are very powerfully effective at communicating on a viable level. The more of this that we do, the more proficient we become at it; the more that we engage in this practice with the same companion, the more intuitive and flowing the thoughts, expressions and communications become.

Here's a thought:

Perhaps our regular communications and messaging to others would become more effective if we incorporated more physical gestures with our verbal conversations. I believe that these gestures add clarity, a deeper emotional understanding of what lies underneath the surface of our words, more emphasis, more memorability and the extra benefit of primitive re-humanizing of ourselves.

When we use these gestures, we become more like teachers and less like preachers.

Try it. You can just nod your head for "yes, Douglas."

Buzzwords And Acronyms Kill Presentations - And They Can Destroy Reputations, Too...

TechRepublic's Daily Digest recently featured a collection of corporate buzzwords that businesspeople absolutely hate...even those of us who sometimes use them in order to avoid being overly verbose (my specialty) or to sound as if we are "in the know" and "state-of-the-art," as well as in the general swing of business. Incidentally, most businesspeople, generally speaking, are brought to the point of nausea by unexplained acronyms, especially when they are used in rapid-fire mixed clusters. You actually trivialize yourself from an executive or statesman down to point of being a lower-level techie or geek by the excessive use of buzzwords and unexplained acronyms. Your communication should convey information without boring or belittling the listener.

Yes indeed: buzzwords and acronyms can kill presentations and destroy your reputation as well. Ironically, many high-falutin' jargonophiles (a Lingovation which I've invented quite spontaneously), think exactly the opposite -- and it represses their successes. Good thing that you're reading this article.

Ironically, the world's wealthiest and most powerful leaders, decision makers and investors dislike these affectations most of all. They are either not conversant in such short-speak, or become angered that you, as a presenter are actually talking down to them -- don't belittle an important connector, mentor or investor by being too damned hip. You should not sound like a talking text message -- at least IMHO [chuckle]:

The most effective way to use buzzwords and acronyms (in speaking) is sparsely, selectively, and with a definition to precede each one. A slight pre-emptive apology is a dignified touch that might score you some points: For example, "For our purposes today, instead of repeatedly saying 'Bend Over, Her It Comes Again,' I'll be using the acronym 'BOHICA'. If someone laughs (particularly a decision maker or your father-in-law to be), you've actually used the whole thing to your advantage.

In writing, the simplest approach is to simply define the term upon its first appearance, and follow it by the acronym that you'll be using thereafter. For example, "On you've established the system, monitoring, or follow-up, is extremely important. For the balance of this chapter, when referring to 'Follow Up' I will be using the simple acronym 'FU' "

A symbol is merely an image -- a picture (and it has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words) which has a deep-rooted historical experience and emotional association (or "charge") with it. Sometimes they are subtle -- and sometimes shocking. Other symbols are merely easily understandable depictions or simplistic signs for giving instructions, directions, warnings. These are obvious, albeit highly simplified symbols. And, of course, logos are symbols which represent brands. Of course physical gestures are often symbolic, but we will only deal with picture symbols in this article.

Every gadget which you own or which you see, from cellular telephones to automobiles, is loaded with simple images which signify (indicate) things in a brief, efficient manner; a technique which crosses cultural, linguistic and literacy barriers. In this manner, a symbol is a compressed instruction or directive, sparing the viewer paragraphs of complex written text copy as well as the time consumed in reading them. They are designed to convey a message with the utmost rapid understandability.

Hence the article Title: SYMBOLS: SUPER-EFFECTIVE CONSCIOUS AND SUBCONSCIOUS COMMUNICATIONS.

Many of these icons or signs (like the one to start your computer, or the 'no smoking' sign, or the 'don't slip on the wet floor' sign, or the 'poison' and 'radioactivity' or 'RSS' signs are considered International Symbols. In an increasingly global and inter-communicative society these are growing in number and significance. They are barrier-breakers transcending cultures, languages and other potential impediments to understanding and marketing.

International Symbols are truly hyper-compressed language. Bottom line: Quick look - Immediate understanding.

Other symbols are not at all instructive -- they have deep emotional charges that are built into them by historical association and they invoke powerful feelings, responses and impressions. These are used in politics, in heraldry, in military and religious contexts. These are the most powerful communications of all. They call the conscious mind to attention; bring a concentrated, rapid-fire 'movie footage' to the subconscious (perhaps several years of experiences reduced to a 'burst' lasting a fraction of a second to several minutes); invoke intense love, hatred, fear, arousal, obedience (base emotions that include visceral responses paired with a screaming call to action or to reaction).

These symbols are truly hyper-compressed history.

Logos are symbols which become associated with brands, and ultimately signify these brands. A good Logo appears to be unique and highly distinctive, but it may intelligently incorporate some elements of international or emotionally-evocative symbols to chance their subconscious or subliminal potency. Have you ever noticed the logos for Head Skis, Federal Express, or Nike?

These logos (symbols) are, in effect, brand representatives... they are precious pixels of intellectual property (IP) which are carefully crafted and which are infused with associated meaning through repetition in conjunction with other forms of messaging. A good logo virtually causes the viewer to instantly recall all of the benefits, features, bargain propositions, previous advertising and promotional efforts associated

A pictorial or video presentation which is constructed of or embedded with multiple symbols can be exceedingly effective at sending a message and provoking behavior. Mad Marketers know this and apply it constantly. Now, to refer to an excerpted piece from an earlier posting in Mad Marketing Tactics:

If you know the emotions (through historical associations with events) which can be brought forth by various symbols, you can incorporate those symbols, in various forms - some subtle, and some not subtle at all - into your messaging and marketing to strengthen your communications, branding, memorability and recipient/ audience motivation ... to inspire a more compelling "Call to action." Human Beings follow their emotions first, and justify their resultant actions with intellect and logic.

Symbols, which are pictures with certain connotations or associations, are the most powerful of pictures. They not only get absorbed into the subconscious, but they are subliminally active and often emotionally-charged. National flags, banners, crests, currency, buildings... every object of importance is embedded with symbols of one sort or another.

Pictures which contain symbols and embedded words or commands (whether readily visible or subliminally visible) are particularly powerful. The viewing audience is quite often unaware of how powerful symbols are, unless they are confronted with very powerful ones (ones that they have been taught to fear or respect): the policeman's badge, the FBI identification card, the cross worn by a priest, the swastika, the Stars and Stripes of the American Flag, traffic signs, automobile dashboard symbols, and the like.

While pictures appeal to the subconscious, symbols (in particular) also have a very powerful direct practical association or emotional charge -- and Human Beings are more readily motivated by emotions than by intellect. Deny it as we might, we do things reactively, out of emotion, and we use intellect to rationalize what we have already chosen to do after the fact.

The following pictures contain some familiar branded logotypes, common symbols, as well as some arcane (but powerfully emotionally/ historically - charged ones. Have a look, and see how they make you feel -- what memories, ideas, emotions and sensations they call forth. You may be surprised.

People are always debating the true nature of "intelligence". I believe that your cranium can be crammed with a vast storehouse of knowledge, but that it you cannot apply that knowledge to changing circumstances, problem-solving and to achieving your selected objectives, you are still, regrettably, unintelligent. Intelligence requires the application of knowledge.

In the challenge of communications, intelligence must be conveyed -- communications involves the expression of intelligence to a second party or parties through the process of teaching. Every good communicator is a teacher, capable of conveying ideas and imagery from within his or her consciousness into the consciousness of another.

Being an effective communicator is the ultimate challenge. It involves acquiring knowledge, cultivating intelligence, and being able to convey that intelligence to others, so that hey may benefit by it. Communication is a serious business -- it is the thread of energy which sustains civilizations and permits advancement.

It is not enough to learn. If you care about the future of Humankind, you are obligated to teach what you have learned to others. Conveying wisdom is your chance to be truly immortal. If you fail to communicate, or if you fail to teach, you are being inherently selfish and you are sacrificing the precious opportunity to immortalize yourself through a gift of genuine utility to future generations.

News Versus Wisdom: Transient Versus Timeless

I had actually meant to post this item of possible interest to those of you who might be interested in Asian politics, demographic trends, capital markets, inevitable eastern world domination, Rare Earth Element export restrictions, exotic recipes, FOREX, and so forth many months ago, when I actually received it. It might have been critically important then -- but then again, as I do not read and comprehend any languages other than English, some German and a bit of urban Spanish (either written or spray painted on aging infrastructure), I hadn't any idea what it meant. If it was breaking news, then this post will be seem to be a waste to many of you. Or perhaps, for those of you who may be Braintenance or Sending Signals adherents, it might actually be incredibly thought-provoking.

Before deleting the correspondence, I thought, "What if the message contained in these curious characters is not breaking news, per se? What if it is wisdom?" I realized at that moment that news is time sensitive, and may have limited utility, whereas wisdom is timeless and has limitless utility. News is important, but transient... wisdom is always relevant. This is a very under-appreciated difference. It captures the very essence of why a wonderful book retains its appeal over centuries while yesterday's racing form, stock market tip, or last month's election forecast may be of such short-lived relevance. Interestingly enough, the above message (I believe it was a response to a post on one of my blogs from some time ago), may or may not be of any significance or utility. It is actually irrelevant to this article.

The importance of this article is by no means dependent upon (or even related to the curious characters in the curious characters above. The importance of this article is that news becomes either stale or irrelevant quickly -- it has a very limited shelf-life. But wisdom, whenever it arrives, remains relevant forever. News is a report. Wisdom is a vastly applicable rule, born of an important observation.

Keep up with the news to remained informed and prepared...but pursue wisdom in order to become the owner of a greater mind. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the news were enriched with more wisdom? Explain Your Circumstances Before Spouting - Your Words Should Be Taken In Proper Context.

If you have just been mugged, served with divorce papers, told that you have one month to live, received a letter of termination from your employer, had dental surgery or just had a telephone conversation with your son who has just lost his graduate school fellowship, it is going to affect the way you speak to others in terms of content, speed, focus and tone. Rather than sound like a maniac, a word-salad machine, a drill sergeant, a disgusted ingrate or an incoherent babbler, explain what happened (i.e., offer your audience context) to you prior to your presentation or conversation so that they will be lenient and compassionate in their receipt of your words.

This introduction of an explanation of context can make a bit of Humanization and empathy work in your favor, and soften an audience to be more receptive to your less impressive (but occasionally more impassioned) speech.

If you walk into the staff lounge of your workplace, which is populated with friends and colleagues (all seemingly happy) right after you've learned that your spouse has been cheating on you with your trusted landscaper (usually named Franco or Fabio), and you blurt out, "What the f**k is wrong with you idiots! Why don't you get back to work?",they will be totally taken aback.

Without at least an explanation of your recent epiphany (and you thought that Franco/ Fabio was being literal when he said, "I love tending to your wife's beautiful topiary garden," and "I have to do some serious aeration."), your colleagues are left to imagine either 1) what they might have done to offend you, and 2) what might be going on in your life that might be making you into a threat to them. Neither sends a good signal.

Rather than having someone scream at me (as if I had done something to warrant his or her anger or resentment), I would automatically feel better, and be more receptive, if he or she were to explain, as a contextual forward, that he or she had just been stopped by a police car and had been subjected to a breathalizer test, a Miller Analogies test, a curbside urine analysis and a full body cavity search. In this way, I would understand that the stressors underlying his or her mannner of speaking were not in response to some shortcoming on my part.

Volunatrily prefacing your words with the context of what is affecting you can give you a great deal more latitude in your communications, and pre-emptively de-fuse your audience from having a strongly adverse reaction (either shutting you out or arguing back at you) to your communications.

What Your Words REALLY Tell Others About YOU.

Your words, and the phrases that you use, speak volumes to others about whether you are dealing from weakness or strength -- from knowledge or ignorance -- from integrity or duplicity. The tone which you use in expressing yourself can sometimes be even speak more loudly about who you really are than the actual words themselves -- but that is another discussion.

Just to solidify the concept of making intelligent, clear wording choices, some examples follow. Of course, your words are only a small portion of your total sensorial communication to others...body language, posture, facial gestures, pregnant pauses, the use of intervals of silence, had gestures, head nodding, eyebrow raising, your vocal pitch (the highness or richness of your voice), your vocal speed the avoidance of "thinking out loud" with "er...ah....let's see...that's a tough one...ummm....ummmm," and numerous other signaling devices help to tell your audience (whether one individual or an auditorium full) whether you are worth taking seriously or not.

1. If you are in command, you won't say in a pleading tone, "We need to have you folks buy-in to...." You will say " In order to do this properly, we'll require each of you to fall into line with this policy...." The word "need" speaks of weakness, and the concept of "buy-in" turns you from a leader into a pitchman. Try to avoid shallow "business-speak" cliches such as "win-win," or "buy-in" or "elevator pitch" when you want to convey genuineness, intelligence and real authority.

2. Don't talk around a point. Get to the point and follow it with a call to action. After every conversation, the person you've spoken with should be expecting something more from you, or he (or she) should have an assignment which he or she is obligated to prepare for presentation to you within a defined timeframe.

3. Don't ask,"Would you be interested in...????" Say: "I'd like to discuss something with you, and I'd like your candid input and commitment." Words such as "candid" and "commitment" convey seriousness and expectation. They are "power words."

4. If you ask a question, and there is silence in response -- leave it there -- don't fill the gaps with idle conversation or simply continue alone with the course of your conversation. Leave the other party to think, and to answer. Don't let him or her off the hook. Be patient -- you have the leverage if you've asked a question. Let silence be your leverage.

5. Don't ask, "Are you interested in......?" Instead ask, "Do you believe that you're qualified for..." Put the other person's ego and self-esteem at stake to get a better response.

These are just a few examples. Be conscious of your speech. Avoid the use of any words which show uncertainty or weakness, or speak of desperation. Remember: It is Human Nature. People are attracted to strength and decisiveness.

By the way, another hint: Never be corned into making a stupid or feeble answer to an important question. Rather than coming across as either ignorant or desperate to please (as if you felt intimidated or challenged, either:

1. Buy time to get it right ("That is an important question. It is too important to give you a casual or off the cuff answer. It warrants some further exploration on my part. I would suggest we revisit this within_________days, so I can give you my complete thoughts. Your question is important enough to answer properly, is it not?" The other person has been put on the spot, and you have bought some time to make an intelligent decision or reply after conducting some research.) or,

2. Refer a qualifying question back to the other party ("It would be helpful to all of us here if you would be specific about the exact circumstances that you are referring to in your question, instead of framing it in such general/ nebulous terms." -- This puts the other party off-balance, on the defensive, and might de-fuse the intensity of the question. It also looks, to both the other party and the audience, as if you are eager to answer the question, if the other individual can find the words to express it properly. It makes you look a bit smarter, and makes the 'interrogator' have to do some work to answer what seems to be a reasonable request for clarification. The interrogator will be seen as being on the defensive, and you will be perceived as being in control.

If you've just learned something new, put it to use. Starting now.

Video Media Carries Increasing Credibility. #OWS #Communication #Marketing #Politics

Video media is the next best thing to either a webcam conversation or an in-person discussion. While video media doesn't necessarily permit interaction between the viewer and the speaker, it gives a message, whatever that message might be, a voice, a face, body language and a personality. It humanizes the transmission (albeit one-sided) and exponentializes its influence potential by 'touching' on so many different senses and on so many different levels.

How often have you had the experience of being surprised upon meeting someone in person for the very first time after having only written to him or her, or after having merely had phone conversations? Sometimes it can be pleasantly surprising -- sometimes (as in the case of a mailorder bride from Turdistan [Turdistan is a Lingovation]), it can prove to be a tribute to the power of Photoshop.

A message, in order to be truly effective, needs a three-dimensional, Human messenger. And the sooner that messenger becomes the spokesperson driving the message into the media, the more potent and viral that message will be. The persona is as significant as the message in so many cases.

I received this message (and the accompanying video) from a TruthOut newsletter. While I don't hold out a great deal of hope for the OWS movement in terms of effecting policy change, I believe it represents a virally-growing threat (pereceived) to the status quo of inequity and unconscionable conduct on the part of a privileged few that will bring about the pressured ouster of some entrenched gluttons, and bring out some "new blood" in government which will help to bring about some basic change.

The Messaging Power Of Poetry

The Scent Of Instant Attraction - Body Chemistry, Pheromones And Perfume

Our sense of smell (our olfactory function) is among the most powerful emotional triggers in our sensory input portfolio. A whiff of a certain fragrance can evoke vivid, multisensorial memories of some past experience, person or feeling -- almost as if time had never passed. Scent can trigger memory, revulsion (just think, eyes closed, of the stench of a skunk's spray, of vomit, of a neglected refrigerator...), or attraction -- I can remember the clean, wholesome fragrance of my first girlfriend's soap, and the principal perfumes and natural bodily smells of virtually every young woman who had the misfortune to date me after that.

The olfactory-recall-attraction/revulsion linkage exists in virtually neurologically unimpaired individual, and it is unique and subjective in each of us. We are programmed, and we can be re-programmed by association of experiences with certain fragrances, and vice versa.

The fragrances can be ambient -- Things like flower blossoms, incense, smoke, burning wood or charcoal, the salt spray of the ocean, napalm, gauze pads, detergents, foods, a car...even the bite of ozone-charged air before a tremendous storm can bring us back to the original scene of something significant.

Or they may be personal -- Things like the smell of someone's body, sweat, breath, cologne, perfume, body wash, shampoo, and a variety of secretions too racy and personal for me to elaborate upon [you'll just have to use your imagination].

Yet, whether ambient or personal, we perceive these on both a very conscious as well as a subconscious level. They are apparent to us, even if we are not fully aware to the extent that they may influence us or provoke involuntary responses.

There are other fragrances, a type of exohormone called a pheromone, which we secrete for certain biological purposes, although this is not completely understood. These chemicals are signals, or messengers, of various things, and they are not readily perceived consciously. Our bodies and emotions react to them, even when we are not aware of the fact that we are being "signaled" by the other party. These pheromones, present throughout the entire animal kingdom (especially amongst insects), subliminally advise us, seemingly body-to-body, of someone's viability to mate (or practice), someone's willingness to bond, someone's fertility, even someone's health or emotional despair... and a host of other things of significance.

While certain pheromones (usually the least subtle ones associated with mating and sexual identity) are of a standard chemistry, the issues that make them a speculative way of exploiting their availability are these:

1) People's sensitivity (reactivity) to pheromones varies;

2) People's reactions to pheromones (even the same ones emitted by the same individual) can vary;

3) Pheromones, in Humans, are part of a melange of olfactory stimulants including other bodily odors, soaps, perfumes, secretions -- if you find yourself attracted to someone, it may not be a particular element that attracts you -- it is more likely the melange, the bouquet of aromas, both subtle and obvious, that is creating the personal magnetism;

4) Each individual's body chemistry (pheromones and other bodily odors) reacts differently, i.e., interacts, when combined with certain manufactured fragrances. This explains why one individual can wear a perfume that causes available dates and prospective mates to swarm, while another individual can wear the same perfume and not receive any attention at all -- except for the saloon keeper, wanting to settle the tab.

In Summary:

The phenomenon of 'instant attraction' is produced by a combination of elements, including: body chemistry (natural and perfumed); ambient olfactory stimuli; the other person's body language (non-verbal physical signaling); and, of course, the eyes, nose, and the subconsious and subjective receptiveness of the beholder.

Don't you wish it could be simpler? I do.

When I was an undergraduate, one of my Psych professors was asking each of us (in a small tutorial) what "turned us on" most about a member of the opposite sex. I remember my ridiculous answer... "laughing eyes, easy smile, faint trace of musk oil, faint trace of soap, and tight bluejeans."

Ridiculous, perhaps. But some nice light musk oil still gets to me. So does an easy smile.

3 Steps To Effective Communication

When you are going to express yourself to a third party, bear in mind the context in which the recipient will be hearing it. Communication involves a combination of the message that the speaker wishes to convey and the mindset (i.e., sensitivities) of the listener. If you do not stop to analyze the psychological territory before you speak words which cannot be unspoken, you may be worse than misunderstood -- you might be downright offensive. This is especially true if you tend to speak in cliches; these may seem like simple shortcuts to expressing yourself, but most of them carry a certain weight of connotation.

The three steps summarized:

1) Listen;

2) Think about what you'd like to say, and how it might sound (and feel) to recipient;

3) Speak.

These steps are crucial in any management or function or business environment.

Abraham Lincoln once said (I wasn't there on that particular day, so I'm paraphrasing the Great Man based upon anecdotal attribution [now is the time for Dictionary.Com]:

"It is far better to be silent and thought a fool, than to open one's mouth and eliminate all doubt."

A great example was delivered to me earlier today.

A fellow who had owned a business which was an abysmal failure, a fellow who couldn't manage either personnel or technology, a fellow who was dependent upon his former colleagues (all of whom were quite loyal to him despite the hard work and lack of adequate compensation) not only to do everything for him, but to constantly reassure him that he was worthy of a position with the firm he founded, said something to me, quite casually.

Bear in mind that his these people worked with great dedication and with great hopes for this 'gentleman' (despite his less than adequate planning, communications, leadership or basic business management skills). They had, to my view, carried him, and tried to accomplish things while he himself stood in the way, not unlike a child abandoned by its mother at a construction site where workers who were trying to operate heavy equipment had to keep an eye out to 'look after the little tike'.

He has now found a newer, simpler business venture (after exhausting all energy and hope of the earlier one succeeding), and is proceeding enthusiastically forward, without having adequately either thanked or settled with those who served him. They are trying to re-establish themselves now, having lost a great deal of time with no reward.

Two of these people are friends of mine, and I (admittedly) tend to be protective of them. I saw, first hand, what they went through to keep this young man's dreams afloat. Importantly, they were very sensitive to his feelings of inferiority and inadequacy, and tried to help him to help himself -- often despite himself.

He recently said, after boasting about winning his first client engagement in this new venture, "I don't know what to do about the 'old company'. There's so much dead weight there. I've got these shareholders, and they're not doing anything for me." Then he proceeded to deride the people who had supported him, to my great offense.

Wanting to express this hurt to him, I pointed out (quite in violation of the 3 steps outlined above -- I'm an occasional hypocrite), that the company's only 'dead weight' had been him, and that these unappreciated, unsung and largely unpaid heroes had carried him for several years. Ironically, but somehow consistently, he didn't apologize for his transgression at all. He was just bothered that he had to deal with the complexity of other human beings whom he had impressed into service, but who not of use to him now.

He might have been better served by observing the 3 steps, above, and saying instead, "I wish I knew what to do about the shareholders in the old company to set things right. Could you help me to figure something out?" But he hadn't been astute enough to frame his concerns as a compassionate-sounding question.

In communications, as in all Human Affairs, if you don't fully trust your own discretion, try to abide by some simple rules, or to follow some simple steps in a protocol.

This fellow lost a great deal of my respect today. His words, spoken about others, showed me some aspects of his character, i.e., selfishness, carelessness and short-sightedness, that made me wonder why these 'others' had put up with him -- had carried him -- for so long.

Use care in communicating, both verbally, and non-verbally. Your signals can win you some new friends, or make you some new enemies. In this case, his offhanded comment spoke volumes to me (a cliche....sorry) about why we should part company.

I learned some disappointing things about a person whom I had previously considered to be a friend because of both 1) what he said (content) about some third parties, and 2) the callous manner in which he said it to me (delivery).

Phrasing, Framing And Tone - POWERSPEECH

The content, and even the urgency and importance of what you are saying are not adequate to win the attention, focus and receptiveness of your audience. Parties on the receiving end of your communications can be rendered either receptive or unresponsive by the manner in which the message is conveyed. Once again, quoting my mother (expert in virtually everything, regardless of her personal level of experience or knowledge of the facts), "It's not just what you say - it's how you say it." She was right. Metaphorically, some individuals won't realize that they are getting a gift unless it is elegantly wrapped in shiny paper and tied with a festive ribbon. Put in another way, the difference between a tiny mound of uncooked ground beef and steak tartar (sp?) is in the presentation and the method of serving [and, of course, the price].

In getting your message the attention and responsiveness it warrants, be advised:

How you phrase it counts.

How you frame it counts.

How you use your tone of voice counts.

Discussion:

No matter what the nature of your message, you must (despite yourself, and despite years of societal conditioning) frame it in a positive way, and in a positive tone.

The Human subconscious disregards negative commands.

In fact, as soon as you run to your boss at the Toyota dealership (or wherever you may happen to be working) and say, "Boss! We've got a problem!," he (or she) will 1) become defensive, unresponsive and angry, and 2) will resent you, personally. -- yep -- it is sort of like that whole, saddening "kill the messenger" thing.

People respond to bad news, or more accurately, to badly-framed and negatively-intoned messages, with fear, resentment and paralysis. This is behavior which is hard-wired into all of us.

In communicating, you have two choices:

1) Change Human Nature; or

2) Accept Human Nature, study it, and use that knowledge to your advantage.

Let's eliminate the guesswork. Choice 2) is the better one. [If you chose number 1, you are indeed either a) an ambitious person; b) a truly impressive optimist, or c) a somewhat feeble person who does not perform well on multiple choice tests. If you fall into this latter category, you are excused and needn't continue reading]

If your business is experiencing problems, and you stand up in a meeting and say "What costs can we absolutely cut? What things can we definitely survive without?," every person in the meeting will sense impending doom, and creativity will shut down.

In a business meeting, talking about "cuts" and "survive" (and other words which are negativevly-charged in their usual context) is not only detrimental because people generally try to escape problems rather than solve them...it can actually initiate a downward spiral in many other areas of the business. It's an attitude-killer.

Talking about how to increase revenues, or how to raise money will generally yield more cooperation than "what can we cut?" The first sounds like ambition. The second sounds like gangrene or some other horrible disease requiring amputation, dismemberment or something equally unpleasant.

There are exceptions.

For example, if the boat has sprung a leak, or the nuclear reactor is overheating, or there is a bomb threat in the mall, you occasionally have to wave the proverbial red flag as an immediate call to action.

Having said that (and I did, didn't I?), unless the situation is a physically threatening emergency which requires immediate, definitive action in order to avoid loss of life, the tone of your message, and the way in which you ask a question or make a request must be positively framed.

As they say..."The glass is always half-full." This is unless, of course, you are Socrates, and the glass contains hemlock.

Don't Offend Your Audience.

If you fail to gather some intelligence about the psychographics (the tastes, preferences, educational level, orientation, strong beliefs, biases, and the like) of the audience you are going to address, or the group to whom you are going to be presenting...or even to the individual whom you are going to meet for the very first time, your best attempts at being a convincing, influential and persuasive communicator may fail miserably. You must define your audience (i.e., understand their thoughts, beliefs, behaviors, comprehension level and the rest) before you deliver a message.

This defining requires some extra effort - an investment in research, and perhaps some preliminary conversations to gather some background information. You must "know the territory" before you run up to the lectern and address a congregation.

Doing this background work can mean the difference between a stunning success and a horrific failure; the difference between a standing ovation and, say, a lynching. Your words, as well as your tone, your body language and other non-verbal communication, will either win you a bunch of believers and admirers, or will lose you a second chance. Perhaps worse.

You cannot afford to offend your audience if you value your success and safety.

Sometimes, when you are thrown into a situation where you cannot do any research, it is best to avoid any potentially controversial topics (even the slightest ones) or off-color humor and invest some time in listening to your audience. In fact, a good rule of thumb is to invest in listening and learning before you invest in speaking. This simple protocol gives you an opportunity to let your audience give you cues so that you may have a better knowledge of what to say (or not to say) and how to say it (or how not to say it).

Invest in listening, observing and researching your audience before you choose your material and the way in which you deliver it. I personally know the consequences of what can happen if you don't -- yes, Ladies and Gents. I have offended individuals and audiences worldwide, and it has cost me dearly. Please learn from my experience instead of having to learn the hard way.

Illusions: The Power Of Suggestion

The power of suggestion can manipulate us to either search for, or to actually perceive things that just aren't there. Every illusion has, at its core, some element of misdirection...of leveraging a knowledge of our psychological "default" and "expectations" patterns. Have you ever heard someone say to you, "If you know where to look, you'll find it," or "If you really, really focus intently enough, you'll see it..."? This creates an expectation, an anticipation that something is there to be found.

It's a paradox of communications and perception that we often cannot see things that are in plain sight, but yet we can envision things that aren't even there. Our imagination is the key that causes us to either see or to not see certain things. Ask any magician, hypnotherapist, or fortune teller, and he or she would be inclined to agree with you (albeit not out loud, or in front of clients in the waiting room).

A good description can virtually transport us out of any real setting into one constructed by the gifted, captivating storyteller. Misleading By Manipulative Presumption.

How do you mislead someone without telling a lie? This is the question asked by defendants, witnesses, prosecutors, defense attorneys, cheating spouses, captives being interrogated, every card-carrying member of any secretive governmental agency and, of course, politicians of every fragrance. The object of the game is to avoid committing perjury while misdirecting someone from the truth; it is always done maliciously, and some persons are much more artful at it than others.

Once, while in my 20s, I had a particularly late night out with some of my banking colleagues (banks accepted deposits and loaned money to individuals and business in those halcyon days!), most of whom where environmentally conscious before it had become fashionable; accordingly, they fueled themselves with high-grade ethanol and propelled us all into a night which we would never forget - if only we could remember it.

I woke up in the remains of a stupor the next morning, and arrived at work bleary-eyed and an hour or so late. My boss, asked me why. I told him, without making full eye contact that, "I had some car trouble this morning, Bob." I was not sharp enough for spontaneous deviousness. It was simply the first thing that popped into my head after realizing, for the very first time, just how bright the lights in the conference room were.

He paused a moment, giving me a chance to retract my story. I was too slow and too intimidated to take advantage of what might have been clemency if not outright amnesty. He asked, "What kind of car trouble?" I responded by saying, "Well, Bob, I had trouble getting into my car." While this was not a lie, it was a quite a stretch. I was neither courageous nor clever enough to be more creative, and I didn't know much about the mechanical aspects of the car, so I told a convoluted truth to make my lie seem like more of a witty comment. Bob was not impressed.

It is what is not said, as much as what is said that draws the victim of a non-lying misleader into the catacombs of presumption. That's the trick. I had learned it too late.

Today I spoke with a business acquaintance of mine, who told me that he was no longer "interested" in "taking on" any "public sector" clients, and that he would be limiting the scope of his consultancy to private sector organizations on a selective basis. I was impressed. I presumed quite a bit.

I found out later, through a mutual acquaintance, that this fellow had never had a governmental (public sector) consulting contract, and further, that he had actually held a low pay grade municipal government job (from which he had been fired) for a number of years, and had been "moonlighting" with some private clients to supplement his income. I had never known that he actually had been employed by the County Clerk's office in a different county. I could never reach him by telephone, and always had to leave messages on his voicemail.

He had mislead me by his keen command of Manipulative Presumption. He didn't lie to me. He just told me enough information for me to draw my own line to connect the dots.

Relationship Strengthening Tools: The Acknowledgment.

In acknowledging a colleague, a friend or a new contact acquired through diligent networking, we have an opportunity (although it may only last a few seconds) to strengthen and deepen the bonding between ourselves, and those we acknowledge. An acknowledgment is a brief greeting when either one or both of the parties is or are either in the midst of another conversation, or in the midst of rapid movement (i.e., rushing to a budget meeting, rushing to a luncheon appointment, or even rushing to a psychotherapist's office to receive treatment for Chronic Rushing Syndrome*). Both parties are usually (and unfortunately) at shouting distance (instead of speaking distance) from each other, but somehow make eye contact.

* I've invented "Chronic Rushing Syndrome" (not really a Lingovation, but more of a Slingovation [look this term up in Google], which is just pure invention instead of clever wordsmithing and word-melding).

The challenge is to get as much warmth, respect and familiarity across to the other person as possible without the advantage of words. A non-verbal challenge.

Optimize the moment by:

1) Stopping your action and facing the person;
2) Nodding your head (in the affirmative direction);
3) Smiling, and mouthing the word "Hello!);
4) Lifting an arm (encumbered or not) to extend a quick wave.
5) Mouthing the words, "I'll be speaking with you."

Resume your other activity, with the comfort of knowing that you have made a stellar impression. You'd be amazed at the power of the message you've sent (you've truly gone out of your way to pay that person some direct attention) with multiple signals through multiple channels. You'd be even more amazed at how well people can read lips from a great distance when a simple, friendly phrase is used.

Humor: Social Lubricant And Deal-Maker

I have a sense of humor. It has literally saved my life (but not my sanity) on occasion.

You see, a genuine smile tends to be disarming and relaxes those around you -- it impulsively makes them more accepting of you, and more receptive to what you are about to say. A sense of humor, especially a slightly self-deprecating one, is thoroughly disarming, especially in a tense communication or negotiation of any sort. It breaks stalemates, banishes negative energies, and allows almost any subject to be re-framed. People crave comedic relief.

While you must be sensitive to the nature of your audience, the circumstances, and some cultural or other occasionally thorny issues, a bit of humor can transform an awkward moment into an interpersonal bonding opportunity.

One rule, generally speaking (and I violate this one too much of the time) -- don't make any other person, or that person's lifestyle, beliefs, or orientation, the subject of a joke. That is a high-risk proposition. The only safe subject is truly yourself. Never, ever take a chance of inadvertently insulting someone else.

Humor, applied judiciously, is a stress-reducer, a re-energizer, a creativity booster and an accelerant to achievement. It brings people closer together, opens a secondary "shadow dialogue" and a richer personal understanding and flexibility between us; and it gives us a chance at "refreshing" our signal.

Pace Your Speech! --> S-L-O-W D-O-W-N...

The average individual speaks fairly rapidly to his or her colleagues, friends and family members. Some of us are habitually prone to speaking quite rapidly, and our audience might often miss a significant portion of the message which we are attempting to communicate -- they will either ask us 1) to slow down; or 2) to repeat what we've said (but at an audible frequency); in the worst case, they may either disregard our rushed communication (as it entails too much effort to follow it), or they may politely listen without telling us that they didn't capture some content.

To make matters worse, when we are very excited, angry or fearful, we naturally tend to accelerate the number of words we spout out per minute, and our voices tend to hit the higher side of our range of pitch (imagine an Irish tenor singing "O' Danny Boy," or a college fraternity party where, after inhaling helium from balloons, the members of the crew take turns speaking like munchkins, tittering and giggling the whole time), which tends to make us sound 1) less in control, and 2) less important.

When you are going to be speaking to an individual, a small group or the entire Press Corps, be certain to counterbalance that natural propensity to speak faster and higher by:

Pausing for breath, and minding posture prior to speaking - ramrod straight and in command;
Making eye contact with each person in the group by sweeping over them with your gaze - tacitly getting their attention and respect;
Taking great care to carefully and clearly enunciate each word, and speak clearly;
Consciously keeping the pitch of your voice as deep and resonant as possible;
Be fairly loud, but do not get frustrated and shout.

In a crisis, or under emotional pressure, you must send your signals slowly, clearly, resonantly and with the proper "gravity."

We are best in control of our audience, when it seems that we are totally in control of ourselves and the situation which confronts us.

Listen To The Whole Sentence.

Sentences are often like meandering paths through a dense forest. Ofttimes people have a round-about way of getting to crux of the matter; instead of getting to it via a straight line, they circle around it. This poses a communication hazard for both the speaker and the listener in terms of Sending Signals.Some communications tips follow which may prove very helpful:

Speakers -- Get to the point directly, before your listener has an opportunity to either fall asleep or to jump to the wrong conclusion and interrupt you before you have made your "case." If you insist on a fully-festooned explanation, simply state your point first, and say "Let me give you some examples which support this..." or something similar.

SPEAKERS - Respect your listener's time.

Listeners -- Do not respond until you've heard the speaker's sentence or explanation in its entirety. If you interrupt, or if you either 1) jump to a premature conclusion, or 2) attempt to finish the statement for the speaker, you will respond inappropriately. Not only will you respond inappropriately, but you may unnecessarily anger both yourself and the speaker. This mutual alienation is avoidable with just a modicum of patience.

LISTENERS - Respect the speaker's right to express himself or herself in his or her own fashion, even if it doesn't coincide with yours.

Communications are a means to understanding, bonding and getting things accomplished. None of this can happen if the either party does not show the other party some respect and consideration.

Good communications mean good business.

Speak With Impact! 5 Keys.

If you speak with impact, you will be admired, respected and remembered. There are several key elements to high-impact speaking. Study them all. Use them all. Master them all. These tips are precious. These techniques are to be cultivated. These little feelas are applicable whether you are speaking via telephone, webcam, or in person -- whether presenting yourself and your thoughts to a crowd or to a select group in a boardroom or a boxcar.

People judge you (very rapidly) by your appearance, your carriage (your posture, your poise, your air of self-confidence, your "charismatic presence"), and by the way in which you speak.

1) Look these BIG THREE techniques up, and then incorporate every one of them in your speaking: rhythm, rhyme and cadence;

2) Speak clearly. Enunciate for clarity, and especially for emphasis;

3) Stay on point. Your first sentence should directly address the topic to be spoken about, and you must emphasize precisely why it is crucially important for everyone to be paying close attention. Your words are important. They convey knowledge. They are weapons of persuasion. You are exerting a force when you speak. You have the power to start or quell a riot. You do;

4) Be as brief as possible, but be certain to express your complete thought. Don't "wing it." Plan what you are going to say. Don't hesitate and temporize with stutterances {*a Lingovation} "um...er...ah..." or clearing your throat. It is far better to pause momentarily (and make it appear deliberate and dramatic) than to destroy your effectiveness by making non-speech noises;

5) Speak in Staccato. Bulletize or outline each point directly for emphasis. Don't speak in meandering prose, or rambling. Make points -- as if each were an immutable Law of Physics. You can even number them if you'd like. Each point should be delivered like a punch. Each must be a nugget of brilliance. Your audience should perceive you as their commanding officer -- they should feel like students, hanging on your every word as if not doing so would cause them to fail a test.

When you have finished delivering your words, instead of summarizing, use that last bit of time to grab an acknowledgement from your listeners by asking an anchoring and positioning question. You may use cues such as: "Have I made myself clear?" "Is there anyone who is even slightly confused?" Say "Thank you." Then either leave rapidly (as if you had some important business to attend to), or sit down slowly and majestically, as if you had just delivered the Gettysburg Address -- whichever is appropriate in the circumstances.

The Power Of Touch In Communicating

Non-verbal communication through the prudent use of touch is extremely powerful in being rapport and in accelerating the establishment of intimacy and trust. Human beings bond through touch, but your use of touch in dealing with persons whom you don't know well must be measured.

In a familial relationship or established friendship, it might be perfectly acceptable to embrace or to hold hands for an extended period of time. In dealing with very new relationships, prolonged touch can easily lead to problems.

The key is to make a brief physical touch become an enhancement, an anchor and an act of delicacy, understanding or respect during the course of a conversation. You don't grope or grab. You don't linger and stroke -- this is about business and friendship -- in fact, it is about the business of developing friendships.

What is most effective during the course of a one-on-one conversation with a new connection is a brief touch after the introductions are fully made, both persons are in full eye-contact with each other, and the tone is appropriately set. The most acceptable and socially potent gestures are a brief touch on the hand, a touch on the shoulder, or , when standing, a gentle pat on the back. If you combine any two of these three within a short expanse of time, the potential for establishing a richer, deeper, more profound level of rapport is geometrically enhanced.

Any of these gestures is far more effective than a perfunctory or obligatory handshake.

The important thing is make the gesture very private, very brief and very warm, without making it callous or invasive. Touch adds a new dimension of power, potency and intimacy (without insensitivity or inappropriateness) to any communication. It makes you, all that you've said and all that you are much more memorable to the recipient.

Symbols: Split-Second Messaging

If you know the emotions (through historical associations with events) which can be brought forth by various symbols, you can incorporate those symbols, in various forms - some subtle, and some not subtle at all - into your messaging and marketing to strengthen your communications, branding, memorability and recipient/ audience motivation ... to inspire a more compelling "Call to action." Human Beings follow their emotions first, and justify their resultant actions with intellect and logic.

Remember that a symbol is a seed which plants a story -- sometimes it is the match which lights a fuse -- sometimes it is the key to opening up the receptiveness of a new acquaintance.

And, on occasion, it creates confusion and dissonance -- especially in the case of certain composite symbols, for example:

We are all Students of Behavioral Psychology, both introspectively (as in "What was I Thinking?") and observationally, or objectively (as in "What made her say that?").

As you already know, the mind processes pictures, and information constructed as pictures, much more rapidly and with a greater sense of recall and association than it does words or text. A Picture may truly be worth a thousand words.

Symbols, which are pictures with certain connotations or associations, are the most powerful of pictures. They not only get absorbed into the subconscious, but they are subliminally active and often emotionally-charged. National flags, banners, crests, currency, buildings... every object of importance is embedded with symbols of one sort or another.

Pictures which contain symbols and embedded words or commands (whether readily visible or subliminally visible) are particularly powerful. The viewing audience is quite often unaware of how powerful symbols are, unless they are confronted with very powerful ones (ones that they have been taught to fear or respect): the policeman's badge, the FBI identification card, the cross worn by a priest, the swastika, the Stars and Stripes of the American Flag, traffic signs, automobile dashboard symbols, and the like.

While pictures appeal to the subconscious, symbols (in particular) also have a very powerful emotional charge -- and Human Beings are more readily motivated by emotions than intellect. Deny it as we might, we do things reactively, out of emotion, and we use intellect to rationalize what we have already chosen to do after the fact.

Symbols have power, depth, and tend to leave a lasting impression. Use them wisely

Communication - Do Not Use Email For Dialogues And Discussions.

Email is the appropriate broadcast or distribution forum for non-time-sensitive mass mailing, sending newsletters, for issuing memos (where an electronic record should be retained) and for sending large attachments. It is superb for contracts, as well. It is becoming somewhat outmoded by many other signaling mechanisms and applications, but it is still quite useful.

Having said this, email does not work, (certainly not even as effectively as instant messaging, rapid back-and-forth texting, telephoning, web conferencing or just getting together (in the real world, and not in some coffee chatroom in cyberspace), for having a conversation. Here's why:

1) Too much time may lapse between sending, receiving and responding. Momentum is lost, timeliness is lost, spontaneity is lost, and nuances of meaning are lost. Emails are cold representatives, and very flat-affect messengers. No brainstorming every happened through a discrete series of emails.

2) If your email subject line isn't a grabber, you're liable to wind up being inadvertently deleted -- and you'll sit stewing in anger on the wrongful assumption that your email was read. There is so much correspondence in the average inbox that your missive is likely to be missed. If it is read by the intended recipient, it may be read more than a day after it was sent.

3) Email now carries a cache, deservedly or not, of being one-sided, and is generally read with a modicum of prejudice against the sender. The hidden message that supersedes and often outweighs the email content is that "I am making a declaration from the mountaintop, and I don't wish to be interrupted by your thoughts or questions."

If you truly want to accomplish something, conversations are best carried out where there is a facility and expectation of rapid thought and response...sort of like neurons transmitting a signal.

The bottom line is this: Use email wisely. It is a useful tool for transmitting information. But never use it as a platform for passionate, urgent or sensitive conversation. It works against you.

Simplifying things is, ironically very complicated. The idea is to capture the essence of the message that you want to transmit, and "bulletize" it -- refine it down to a few memorable, numbered items. It is politically incorrect to refer to this process as "Retardifying" or "Dumminating," despite the fact that both are acceptable Lingovations.

In speaking with D.J. Sherman, the entrepreneurial founder of the company that invented the The MPower Escape Case™, and one of my favorite TNNWC clients, I accidentally found a way to plainly, clearly describe the media processes and targets that every early-stage enterprise must undertake and acquire. Lookee!

Get Them Gawking...Get Them Talking...

Early-stage marketing and promotion of ideas, products, services and people are crucial things. Fortunately, they require only three critical steps. Complete those and you are off to branding, building and filling orders (or filling your calendar with engagements).

Here they are (The Big 3) as they relate to your target audience*:

1) GET THEIR ATTENTION;

2) GIVE THEM A CALL TO ACTION;

3) ENGAGE THEM - FASCINATE THEM.

* As an early-stage enterprise, your three targets are generally: A) angel investors, venture capitalists, credit enhancement sources (all collectively, "capital'); B) prospective distributors, affiliates or licensees (all collectively, "distribution channels"); and C) thought-leaders, experts, gurus, publishers, influencers and credible third-party sources (all collectively, "trend makers") to spread (i.e., buzz, re-tweet, blog about) your idea and needs into NEWS and DEMAND.

Multi-Tasking During Conversations And Meetings - Not Smart, Not Ever.

It would seem to be simply a matter of common sense and courtesy to refrain from appearing distracted, unfocused, preoccupied, scattered or inattentive during a conversation with another individual. Especially when you cast in the role of listener.

Yes, you're busy. We're all busy. Too busy.

Maybe you don't have a great deal of time, but while you are having a brief, intense discussion with another Human Being, stop doing everything else except those things that are part of your critical physiological sustenance. Also:

1) Disclose any time limitations (always have one) at the outset;

2) Give the individual your undivided attention, with full eye contact, and a forward-leaning listening posture;

3) Ask the occasional gratuitous, "clarification" question, such as ..."If I understand you correctly, you would prefer...." It is proof that you are actually interested in what the content of the conversation is, and that it is important that you understand clearly.

Don't resume your multi-tasking of other business of the moment until the other individual has left your space, or you have left his or hers. This courtesy indicates that you are allowing the import of the conversation to "sink in"...that you are processing the matters spoken of.

Do these things, and people will feel that they are being heard. And that, for whatever reson, makes YOU a brilliant conversationalist. People need to be heard -- a good listener is often complimented by the ironic reference as being a good conversationalist.

Sometimes, people will assume that you have a brilliant mind behind those dull blue eyes if you just look as though you are listening intently. Sometimes, the more intently you listen (with the appropriate body language to further support this), the more intelligent the other person will think that you are.

Try it. Perfect it. It absolutely works. One of the most respectful things that you can do in order to honor a person, any person, is to listen attentively -- even for a short while.

Productive Conversations, Resolving Disputes And Finding Things In Common

We all have differences, both real and perceived. Productive communication makes it possible for us to eliminate the perceived differences, work on resolving (compromising or negotiating) the real differences, and to find out what we have in common. Very often, the things that unite us far outweigh the things that divide us. But we'll never learn if we don't have a serious and sincere conversation. An example follows:

Collaboration and Competition are not mutually exclusive. Neither are Sustainability and Capitalism.

Sustainability creates employment opportunities, spawns innovation, and is based upon a sound economic principle of efficiency; just as the profitability of a capitalistic institution, i.e., a business, is largely dependent upon the the leveraging of efficiencies.

The trick is to get both sides, the Sustainability/ Environmentalist contingent, and the Capitalist/ Entrepreneurial contingent, to engage in open-minded dialogue to the benefit of both. The steps are sensible enough:

1) Get the attention of thought-leaders on both sides;

2) Get them seated at the same table to explore their common objectives -- the things that bind them are vastly greater and of more value than the differences (largely perceived, and born of overzealousness, rivalry and a general politicized bigotry);

3) Get them to understand that they can work together synergistically, to the benefit of both, and to the detriment of neither.

To quote a line from a movie, "What we have here is a failure to communicate."

The initial task of getting the parties to sit down together peaceably will require the skills of a diplomat, a moderator and a negotiator/ dealmaker. But this is a task that needs to be performed and rapidly. This failure to communicate and to collaborate costs every citizen of the world with every day that passes, both in terms of a struggling global economy, and an environment that is becoming increasingly toxic. -DC

Every project manager, management consultant, engineer, CEO, COO, attorney, physician, leader and entrepreneur should take this test. The paradox here is that very intelligent individuals have a natural tendency to be impatient, and to "jump the gun" to arrive at answers. In this particular test, the performance advantage is on the side of the more studious and methodical among us.

Fact: The most obvious things tend to elude even the most clever minds.

The best aspect of this test is not what it measures -- it is that in taking the test, itself, you will receive a valuable lesson in how your mind works. Think of the educational efficiency of this device: You actually learn by the act of taking a test. Elegant, eh?

It presents a wonderful opportunity to test your Practical Intelligence Quotient in the form of several quick questions. Read the instructions carefully before you begin.

Hint: Do not assume anything. Utilize all of the facts presented to answer the questions, one after the next. Your growing (cumulative) knowledge base will help you to answer each question in the sequence correctly. Correct Answer : The Elephant. The elephant is in the refrigerator. You just put him in there. This tests your memory. Okay, even if you did not answer the first three questions correctly, you still have one more chance to show your true abilities.

4. There is a river you must cross but it is used by crocodiles, and you do not have a boat. How do you manage it?

Correct Answer:? You jump into the river and swim across. Have you not been listening? All the crocodiles are attending the Animal Meeting. This tests whether you learn quickly from your mistakes.

According to Anderson Consulting Worldwide, approximately 90% of the Professionals whom they tested got all of the questions wrong, but many of the preschoolers who were given the same test arrived at several correct answers.

Anderson Consulting Worldwide says this conclusively proves the theory that "most professionals do not have the brains of a four-year-old."

TNNWC believes that the above conclusion is a bit ridiculous, overly generalized and poorly-worded (I personally detest the part about the "brains of a four-year-old": because A) someone is apparently confusing the plural with the singular and the notion of intelligence with brains; and B) depending upon your interpretation of the Anderson conclusion, this does not preclude the lugubrious possibility that these tested professionals do not have, either in their offices or their homes, the actual brains of four-year-olds preserved in mason jars [ecch!].

But the one useful conclusion derived from this exercise upon which our TNNWC Experts and Advisors would agree would be that presumptions can be hazardous in effective decision making.

An Image Is A Compressed, Compacted Story - Told In A Fraction Of A Second.

You must visualize a goal in order to achieve it. Even your neighborhood NLP Practitioner will say "visualize" even if he or she actually means imagining some future time (as if it where right here, right now, in the present) in multi-sensorial detail. This is because the vision, the image, is almost always the most powerful part of the imagination experience. Your personal and professional success will largely be determined by your ability to visualize and implement. Your leadership and managerial success will largely be dependent upon your ability to communicate that vision to others.

The Human eye records detailed images in a tiny fraction of a second. It then proceeds to process them consciously. After this, it contuously processes (in great detail, with a high degree of correlative symbolism) the logo image in the subconscious, where "intuitive" or "instinctual" feelings about the image are created. It's rather like "love at first sight."

Your logo is not a decoration. It is a message. It is a symbol... in point of fact, it is a tiny picture of your entire BRAND universe, replete with your personality, attitude and beliefs. It is a messenger in miniature, and is far more memorable than an entire written or oral presentation. Take it very, very seriously. It is a sharp little business promotion tool that can be worth millions of dollars -- or, it can spell stagnation for your otherwise promising business.

Branding: Your Logo, And The Message That It Sends

Your logo is a critical component of your marketing, media and publicity campaign. It is a messenger.

It is a static picture or typestyle which speaks volumes about your business, product, service or brand in the literal blink of a consumer's eye. It must be memorable, distinctive and must penetrate at a multitude of psychological (conscious and sub-conscious). Your logo is a the shortest but most powerfully efficient form of ideological communication that exists. The mind processes and recalls graphic images much more readily than slogans or copy.

A logo is a first impression, but it remains imprinted on your consumer audience's conscious and subconscious for a long time. You must take care to have this tiny image be the purified, concentrated essence of your identity. A potent logo is worth its weight in unobtainium. It is a holograph of everything that you are. It must be perfect.

The biggest threat to the efficacy of a logo is unintended symbolism, either by the visual similarity to something unsavory, or by the implications which can be drawn by a closer look at what your logo actually says; the first has an immediate effect, while the second tends to smolder. These flaws can undermine a brand.

You Are What Your Corporate Logo Says You Are

In the wake of the vigorous debate about the status of green marketing (and responses like this one and this one), it’s important to remember the powerful message corporations’ logos convey. For example, several years ago, a friend pointed out the subliminal arrow embedded in FedEx’s corporate logo.

Admittedly it took me a couple days to really see it. After all, I was trying to turn the tide of long-term memory—I’ve seen countless FedEx trucks over the years. Only after staring at a FedEx truck for what seemed like an eternity (likely no more than 20 seconds), I finally noticed the arrow. Years later I can’t help but notice the arrow every time I spot a FedEx truck. What is the arrow’s significance? It communicates what the company is about—moving products, and aspirations, forward.

To grasp the power of FedEx’s logo, consider the following logo, used by Sherwin-Williams, best known for its success as a global paint manufacturer. What does this logo convey?

The company’s logo clearly conveys the image of a paint company with global reach. The paint being spilled all over the Earth (with the comment ‘Cover the Earth’) also suggests either that Sherwin-Williams has limited concern about its product’s environmental impact. Sherwin-Williams’s logo isn’t aligned with its measured concern for the environment (as witnessed by its environmental sustainability initiative, called EcoVision). ####

What does your logo say about you? You might wish to design a better one. I know of some people who can do that.
